According to a new study, Saturn’s moon Titan—the solar system’s SECOND largest moon, larger than the planet Mercury—is an ideal place for a human colony and has the necessary requirements to sustain around 300 million people.
When looking at our solar system, and the best place for the human race to colonize, many experts point towards Mars as the ideal place where our species can create colonies and expand our civilization. However, despite the fact that Mars is probably the most likely place where we’ll travel next, scientists say that Saturn’s moon Titan has enough energy to sustain a human colony of around 300 million people.
Titan has a diameter of 5,150 kilometers and is the solar system SECOND largest moon, even larger than the planet Mercury.
Scientists are convinced that Titan could help mankind colonize the solar system. The first humans on Titan could use the moon’s radioactive decay in order to set up fully functioning nuclear power plants and could furthermore utilize the hydrocarbon lakes on the moon in order to generate much-needed power.
This is why experts agree that as a resource for long-term, solar-system-wide civilization, Titan would be a pivotal place.
Titan—a bright light in our quest to colonize to solar system
Scientists have been looking for ideal places in our solar system that could help power human colonies for years. Now, Scientists from the Planetary Science Institute and the California Institute of Technology studied Titan and what it could offer for future human colonies.
Speaking to New Scientist a planetary scientist from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland said: I think long-term, after Mars, Titan’s probably the next most important place that people will have an extended presence.
Titan is of extreme importance because aside from Earth, it is the only known place in our solar system that could have rivers, rainfall, seas and even waterfalls, making it an eerily similar place to Earth in many ways. However, unlike on Earth, Titan’s seas are composed of liquid methane.
Today Saturn’s moon has several advantages that could make it an ideal place for human colonies. In order to generate electricity on the moon, human colonists could take advantage of the strong tides created by Saturn py creating wind turbines.
The study also looked at how future colonists could position massive wind turbines into the upper atmosphere of Titan, creating power around ten times for effective than wind turbines on our planet.
By positioning massive solar panels around titan, future colonists could harness power in order to provide energy for around 300 million people.
